ABOUT THIS COURSE
Alexander the Great conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks, fused the eastern and western peoples of his empire, and became a god – before his 33rd birthday. This course explores the life, leadership, and legacies of history’s warrior, and one of its most controversial leaders, an ambiguous genius whose story helps us to understand not only the history of warfare, but also different ideas about human sexuality, the history of relations between east and west, and the religious beliefs both of ancient polytheists and modern monotheists.

COURSE STAFF
Guy MacLean Rogers
Guy MacLean Rogers is Mildred Lane Kemper Professor of Classics and History at Wellesley College. Professor Rogers’ research has focused upon ancient religion and warfare. His books include The Sacred Identity of Ephesos: Foundation Myths of a Roman City, which was awarded the Routledge Ancient History Prize, and most recently, The Mysteries of Artemis of Ephesos: Cult, Polis and Change in the Graeco-Roman World(Yale University Press, 2012). His biography Alexander: The Ambiguity of Greatness was published by Random House in 2004 and has been translated into Russian and Greek. In 1997 he was a Senior Visiting Fellow at All Souls College Oxford and in 2003 he received the Perennial Wisdom Medal.
